Embossing & Engraving
Embossing and Laser Engraving –
Add a personal touch to your albums with one of our popular front cover embossings or laser engraving. We offer:
• Standard Text Embossing (you supply text, eg names and dates)
• Custom Embossing (you supply finished artwork)
• Companion Embossing (using an existing custom embossing block)
• Studio Embossing (we emboss your studio logo)
• Laser Engraving (you supply finished artwork)
Blind vs Foil Embossing: Both Standard and Custom embossings are available 'blind embossed' — ie simply pressed into the underlying material. Embossing with coloured foils is available for most Custom and Standard embossings depending on the material. Details follow.
Some of our cover materials are not suitable for foiling, embossing and/or laser engraving. Please check our online cover swatches to confirm what is available on the material of your choice.
Design and Layout: Embossings and laser engravings are normally placed in the centre of the cover, but within limits you can request a different position (most often bottom right). Always consider how the artwork will look on the book or album you're ordering (for example it may look too large on a very small album). Embossing and engraving cannot be combined with other cover detailing such as photo fronts, cover motifs or wrap-arounds.
Standard (Text) Embossing
For this service you specify the font you require, and supply the text to be embossed, typically names and dates. Please double-check spelling, especially proper names. We cannot be responsible for errors in the text supplied.
Some fonts allow for two lines of text, some only one. The number of characters is limited, typically no more than +/-20, depending on the font and the size of the product.

If you'd prefer something different, such as a monogram, logo, different font or more characters, choose custom embossing and supply finished artwork to suit one of our standard templates.
Not all artwork or fonts are suitable for embossing or foiling — for example fine detail, most photographic images and anything that cannot be rendered as black on white. We will advise if your artwork is not suitable.
Laser engraving is very striking, but available only on a limited range of materials, depending on the fabric's appearance after the surface has been marked by the laser. Please check our online cover swatches for availability.
Laser engraving does not require a block. You can laser up to half the area of the front cover. Size does not affect the cost, but do consider the design impact on the product. Artwork can be a more intricate than custom embossing, but we will advise if it is not suitable. Click here for how to create the finished artwork.
Depending on the material we can now emboss “blind” or with
Studio and Companion Embossing
If you want us to emboss your studio logo on a book or album, ask for Studio Embossing. You will need to supply artwork to create the embossing block, just as with Custom embossing, but the cost of the block will be covered the first time you use it. After that we will charge only a small fee each time we re-use it. Similarly, if you want us to emboss the same personalised custom embossing block on a second product, ask for Companion Embossing. The same minor fee will apply.
