Ordering an album designed in third-party software

Not everyone wants to use our software, or our free design service, to design Flushmount albums and Q-Books … not when they're already up and running with alternatives like Fundy or SmartAlbums. But if you want to use third-party software, take great care to ensure that your files comply with our design specs.

Please also read How to order an album in Workspace, as you will need to go there to upload your print files, specify the album details, confirm your order and make payment.

Order third-party designed album

Queensberry's own design tools have built-in checks to help ensure your files meet our technical specifications (file dimensions, DPI, ICC profile etc). But it is possible to order products, designed in third-party software. Just be wary that you’ll need to take a little extra care when designing in third-party software to avoid problems like the ones listed above.

To order, in Workspace go to Buy / Books & Albums, and choose “third party software” as the Design Method. Currently, you can order Flushmount albums and Q-Books with third party software, but not matted albums.

Whichever software you prefer, make sure it allows you to set the page dimensions, and can export photo quality PSDs or PDFs (or Jpegs for print-ready orders). Read below for page dimensions.

For those designing in Smart Albums or Fundy: These two design programmes contain our resources. You will not need to set the page dimensions yourself.

Once you have finished the design: Export the design as single sides or double page speads, depending on your printing option- see below, and upload the print files to Workspace as either PSDs, PDF or Jpeg files for print-ready orders. Please note that for colour corrected files you MUST upload unflattened PSD's.

PDF specifications

The page dimensions, and whether single-page or double-page layouts are required, will depend on the book or album size, and the printing method (digital offset, traditional silver halide, or Fine Art (Inkjet) printing).

We recommend that you adopt Adobe RGB (1998) as your working space when printing with Queensberry. This is because of its bigger colour gamut and is the only option for offset-printed orders. But as an alternative, you could use sRGB for Silver Halide and inkjet printing. For more on Queensberry's recommended working (colour) space, click here.

Silver-Halide and Inkjet printed Flushmount albums

250 DPI, Adobe 1998 RGB (preferred) or sRGB colour space.

Traditional photographic (silver-halide) printing is normal, in which case medium-weight pages offer more capacity — up to 45 pages (90 sides) as against 30 heavy-weight pages (60 sides).

Fine Art (inkjet) printing is also available, but with medium-weight pages only, and a maximum of 30 pages (60 sides).

NB the first and last sides (inside the front and back covers) must be blank.

Digital-Offset printed Flushmount albums

250 DPI, Adobe 1998 RGB colour space only.

Up to 60 single-sided heavy-weight pages. NB the first and last sides (inside the front and back covers) must be blank. The PDF does not need to be flattened - layered PDFs will give better results.

Digital-Offset printed light-weight and medium-weight Q-Books

250 DPI, Adobe 1998 RGB colour space only.

Up to 160 single-sided light-weight pages, or 90 single-sided medium-weight pages. NB the first and last sides (inside the front and back covers) must be blank. The PDF does not need to be flattened - layered PDFs will give better results on digital offset prints.

Upload additional files to your order

You may need to upload additional images or layouts to a third-party designed order, after you've already submitted it us.

NB To make sure we can clearly link your new files or layouts with your current order, please send an email to orders@queensberry.com with the original Album ID number and the reason for you to be sending us these files.

Third-party design tips

  • If you upload PSD files, please check the order that they are appearing in Workspace before sending the order. Workspace may have them out of order as different sized files will upload at different rates and may throw out the sequence. Before sending, you can rearrange the layouts in Workspace by dragging and dropping them into the correct order. This is important as once we have received the layouts we base the sequence of layouts on how they appear in Workspace.

  • When using third party products, whether they have our resources built in or not, to remove confusion and doubt, read Queensberry's file specifications. There are certain products that require the layouts to be single sided and others that need to be double sided.

  • Be aware that in the album set up that you need to add the number of layouts (pages) and that we count the first and last layout as one page. So physically you may have 20 layouts to upload but in the Album set up you need to enter 19 (pages).

  • Don't send in a PDF file or JPEG file if you want colour correction. We only correct on PSD files.

  • If you are wanting a Book or a Flushmount album with one of our digital offset papers (eg. Tintoretto, Satin) do not send the file in with the sRGB colour profile. We require Adobe 1998. If the wrong profile is used the colour in your images will be incorrect.
